WordPress, by definition, is a blog publishing system written in PHP and backed by a MySQL database. But really provides a foundation with a lot more features and functions for old and new Web Masters.

This site is built utilizing WordPress and it runs many of the sites I develop. Sure it can run the advanced and flexible blogs, but it’s because of that flexibility that I choose to utilize WordPress as a Content Management System (CMS).

WordPress as a Blog

WordPress provides the foundation upon which a blog is built, published through, and displayed to the world. Some of the biggest blogs in the world utilize WordPress for just one or even a large number authors (The New York Times, CNN, People, TechCrunch, Engadget, and so on all utilise it).

Having a blog is great for any business. Using a blog consistently provides fresh content for your vistors to view and subscribe to. It’s also an leading indicator that your business is active and reassures potential customers that you are interested in them and their knowledge. Don’t you want to be known as the specialist in your field? Publish your thoughts in a blog and you’ll not switch potential customers to actual customers but have a competitive edge in your industry.

WordPress as a Website

The great thing about WordPress is that once your site is created you’ll have the ability to edit, add, subtract, and whatever else you need to do with just about all of the content in your site. You also don’t need to be a technical guru – no knowledge of HTML is required. You can avoid re-doing your whole site in two years when your business model changes and you won’t have to worry about the cost of hiring someone who knows HTML to change the price your products. You have control! If you want to alter the look of the site in 12 months time, alter the template and wallah!

A professional, maintained, fresh and well designed web site is crucial to converting visitors into customers. In a society of short attention spans and where first impression count, your website has to shine and engage visitors, something that WordPress enables a designer like myself to do much more quickly.

More WordPress Plugins..

As a follow-on to my previous post on WordPress Plugins, some of my friends pointed out I missed a few. A word of caution – select your plugins wisely, don’t go nuts as too many can slow your blog down.

Akismet

The must have spam catcher and it’s included in the WordPress distribution. If you haven’t activated it, do it ASAP before the spammers start hitting your site.

Comment Luv

This plugin is responsible for placing the link to your latest posts on comments. Nice plugin, it crawls your site (from the info you submit while commenting), and get’s the latest URL, parse it as HTML beneath your name.Bad thing – To tweak the text that appears with it, there are no options menu, and you have to edit the code. Not too many are comfortable doing it.

No Revisions Plugin

WordPress 2.6 and higher, one new feature that has yet to bite too many people is post revisions. Whenever you save a change in a post in WordPress 2.6, it saves a copy of the old version as well as your changed version. If you hit ’save’ a lot while writing, that can add up to a lot of extra crud in your database. It was alot sloppier to fix it before this plugin. You simply install and activate:

Again, make sure you’re turned on plugins are actually useful, either for the additional functionality in your blog or your visitors pleasure. The more work your blog has to take when loading plugins, can slow down it’s performance.

As we all now have changed our blogs to WordPress (WP) and are receiving the benefits of web site simplicity and the great features it offers make it totally unique and irreplacable. This blog uses WordPress too.

Although the great features that WP offers to make your blog decent you need some plugins that are free to download. These are the ones I most commonly use:

All In One Seo Pack : It’s a plugin that makes instant SEO to your blog post. The post are optimized in Search Engines and submitted very fast. Let’s you set MetaData for your blog, in a single place.
All in One Adsense and YPN: automatically inserts google adsense ads or yahoo publisher network (YPN) ads in to your posts on the fly.
Google Analyticator: adds the necessary JavaScript code to enable Google Analytics logging on any WordPress blog.
FeedBurner FeedSmith : This plugin detects all ways to access your original WordPress feeds and redirects them to your FeedBurner feed account so you can track every possible subscriber.

Google XML Sitemaps : This plugin will generate a sitemaps.org compatible sitemap of your WordPress blog which is supported by Ask.com, Google, MSN Search and YAHOO.
Really Simple Sitemap: lists all of your published posts so that a user (or search engine) is never more that 2 clicks away from any post on your blog.
Sociable: Adds social media buttons to your posts. Adding this plugins to your default WP blog provides a solid foundation to your new blog. They are very easy to install and require not very high skills to configure.

Wordpress MU available at mu.wordpres.org. This version is just right for corporations because with one installation you can run multiple blogs on one domain. Unfortunately it is not free.

For those with little or no experience on blogging, the support by Wordpress is vital. The supports include a large member’s community through online forum, or make contact with the support staff.
